This wall sculpture is not only impressive but also spectacular in motion thanks to kinetic energy. Once swung, the spring and internal gears work together to move the front and rear wheels in alternating patterns for up to 14 hours.
Style 2 Vice Versa
I experimented with different amounts of springs, thickness, and angles. The result was designs that are both visually appealing and dynamic. I confirmed the patterns by creating animations of the designs. The real challenge, however, was animating these designs. My first approach was not as balanced as desired. After making adjustments and fine-tuning the center of gravity, I was able to accurately determine the correct point. My second attempt was completely successful.
One side of the design resembles unfurling fans, while the other side extends outwards. As these movements become apparent, everything appears in a flickering pattern. The changing rotation speeds combined with this design create a work of art that is simply irresistible.
More intricate patterns that accompany these wheels typically require a more subtle movement than simpler designs, to avoid visual confusion. The duality represents what I see as a more complex asymmetrical wheel design. To fully comprehend the patterns produced, the mechanism must move the wheels in a predictable manner. In contrast to sculptures like Eternity, which feature symmetrical wheels, the reason I chose a random and unpredictable mechanism here. After adjusting the design for the wheel of duality, I began experimenting with various movements to find the most visually appealing combination. After finding the right balance, I created a true sculpture!
How they work:
Hamster? Just kidding! Each of my kinetic sculptures functions as a wood-based machine powered by a constant winding spring. Even when stationary, they are visually appealing, but their true charm emerges when in motion. A simple crank is all that's needed to initiate the movement and subtle sounds that can last for varying intervals. Achieving longer run times has always been my goal. Some models can run for 1.5 hours, while others can last up to 24 hours! This represents a significant improvement from my earlier designs, which stopped after just 20 minutes.
Important:
Once your order is placed, we will take care of everything. This typically involves cutting the wood, sanding, and treating it. We then conduct movement tests (this can take 7-10 days depending on the project); once everything is confirmed and adjusted as needed, we apply a protective layer to enhance its appearance and preserve the piece against pests and mold. Finally, we thoroughly package the product and ship it to you.
